I went out to shovel snow today. I had on wool socks, long johns
thermal shirt, sweat shirt, all covered with a one piece carharts.
Heavy boots, a military arctic hat and military arctic gloves. I
could only stay outside for about fifteen minutes and my fingers would
get cold. The gloves I was wearing were heavy leather outside and
fleece inside. Made for arctic use. And I got cold shoveling snow.

I find cotton on the inner layer to be comfortable. Synthetics on the
inner layer, even socks, give me a rash and chafing without the sweat.

I bought some wool socks at a backpacking/adventure store. They're
made out of mountain goat's wool. I love them. You should try some.

My cousin sent me a real Air Force parka (with real wolverine fur and
wool felt inner lining) when her husband was stationed in Alaska. It's
only been cold enough to wear it here ONCE -- maybe 35 years ago we
accompanied the tinies on a trick-or-treat expedition, and even then it
was too warm.

Now ya see, you live in California. If you lived in Michigan you'd
wear it all the time. From November to April.

I just checked. It's 3 degrees right now.
