Default least crowded resort with warm temperature

First off, you want it cold. Cold equals better snow AND you don't get
wet, which is uncomfortable.

Second avoiding the crowds depends on what your skills/needs are.
Different resorts get different populations. Example: Jackson Hole
attracts steep and deep skiers; intermediates stay away in droves,
unnecessarily, since Jackson has lots of nice intermediate terrain and
few people on it, even when the rest of the mountain is crowded. Contra,
try some of the "family vacation" Colorado resorts - most have some
small area of pretty decent terrain but the vacationers stay down on the
intermediate slopes ( but the good slopes do get crowded with locals
after a dump.)

Also play the clock - most of the dilettantes don't EVEN get out till
10:30 or so, so get your skiing in from opening lift ride till the
crowds arrive, stop for a break till the crowds come in for their
regular 2 hour lunch at 11:30 wherein you ski till they come back out at
1, then knock off for an afternoon break, then ski from crowd knockoff
time (starting about 2) until closing. Lots of skiing, no crowds. But
most vacationing skiers ski during the crowded hours, go home and
complain about how crowded it was - it's like they go out for a pleasure
drive at 3:30 Fridays in an urban area - chronologically challenged, IMO.

It is unusual for anyplace in the lower
48 to be uncomfortably cold in March.

Here in the Northeast, we consider December
and January as necessary to get into shape
for Feb, March and April.

IMO, March is the best month to ski. Longer
daylight hours, higher temps, better snow.
Here in Vermont, March typically gets the
largest amount of snowfall without nasty
thaws and really horrendous re-freezes of
January.

So, if you are stuck with the east, March
is just the best.

If you can go west, I like the Tahoe areas
about as well as anything. Though Colorado
is said to be really nice, the best skiing
is higher and I start to wheeze above 10K'.

Un-crowded? Well can you pick your days?
Saturdays are always best left for football
on TV. Sundays start to clear out in the
PM and Monday thru Friday is great anywhere.

I would have to go during a school holiday so it will be crowded
everywhere. That's why I'm wondering the top one or two least-crowded
places to go, even if they are very expensive. Thanks for the other
thoughts.

Where are you? I don't recall any school holidays
in March. Our local holidays are President's week
in late Feb and Spring break in April. Nothing
that I can recall in March.

Hi VtSkier,

Down here in Southern New Jersey some schools use March for their spring
break.

I am a huge fan of the Salt Lake City area. I stay in the city and
drive to what ever resort has the best conditions that day. While there
are no guarantees, I have never gotten skunked there in March and have
had some incredible days over the past 14 years there. HTH. TMMV.

Dave

I have to go with the Tahoe area. They have great conditions in
March, and there are many places to choose from.

I recommend Squaw Valley, and Kirckwood. I can't believe I didn't
mention Heavenly.

Go to the Stein Eriksen Lodge, and see his gold medal.

That doesn't stop most people / families.

You're right, except that we don't see the BIG
crowds during the week except during school
vacation times.

True. Presidents Weekend (the one in February) is absolutely NUTS in
the Utah resorts.

Here too. Plus the April one gets lots of Brits,
who have varying vacation schedules. I think we'll
see lots more Brits this year with the devaluing
of the $ against the pound and with it so expensive
in Europe.

There are plenty of schools that have their spring break in March.
Colorado has people on spring break for the entire month of March.

That's at Dearest Valley, well known for good food and beginner skiing;
NOT Heavenly (Or Squaw Valley, or Kirckwood[sic].)

PS there really used to be a wee Kirk in the woods at Kirkwood - anybody
know if it's still there?

You are correct, but I didn't say that the Stein Eriksen Lodge was at
any of those places. I just said it was in the Tahoe area.

If you are trying to insult me, I will find you and burn your entire

Guess where I was yesterday, Walt. I was in Romulus, at the airport.
I got to go on the Detroit Piston's jet. It was soooo cool.

They wanted me to sit in the cockpit, but I didn't want to. I might
have spilled my drink.
