re-waterproofing ski gear?
Anyone know of a product that works for re-proofing ski gear. I tried
a large can of some generic silicon camping spray, but it really didn't make a blind bit of difference I don't mind if it makes the fabric darker, or shiny, or whatever. What's more effective, spray, wax, wash-in stuff? Cheers, -- __Jambers__ -----please de-MUNG address to reply----- -- __Jambers__ -----please de-MUNG address to reply----- |

After washing (clean and still damp) the garment you spray this stuff on and put in the dryer on medium heat for 50 mins. Works good for me. There are some others, like Nikwax, that you wash the garment in. This may be better if you can't put your gear in the dryer. Mike |

Assuming you're talking Gore-Tex, for instance, I find a wash cycle with powder detergent, followed by a low-temperature ironing, makes a huge difference. Throw in some Nikwax or Revivex for added measure. If you're talking about a 70s-era Bogner one-piece, or mil-surplus wool and canvas, then try Scotchguard. Or try new gear. bw |

re-waterproofing ski gear?

Anyone know of a product that works for re-proofing ski gear. What kind of gear? Goretex and the like are waterproof because of a waterproof membrane, with pores for water gas to pass through (breathable, right?) But that doesn't keep the outside dry, so most Goretex also has a water repellent surface (beads the water up.) That fails eventually, the surface gets damp, and the wearer thinks the garmont is no longer waterproof; not so, BUT the outer water repellent surface can be renewed - as bdubya said it's simple; machine wash and dry, powdered detergent usually suffices. Some people try sprays, but you have to make sure whatever you use doesn't clog the membrane pores. Simple urethane inner coatings can be repaired with paint on urethane - like used for sealing tent seams. Silicon water repellents can be renewed with sprays - but you have to really wet the fabric - I've seen people who thought all that was needed was a single pass from a spray can - nope. |

re-waterproofing ski gear?
Sorry, should have said...it's not goretex, it's just cheapo
polyester/nylon which I reckon was originally coated with something, and it worked quite well to begin with, but after 2 seasons solid, they need some help! I really like the gear and don't want to get rid of it, also can't afford to buy new stuff! Reckon I'll try that Nikwax stuff, see how it goes. Just had a look at their site, it's got a handy material database thing... http://www.nikwax.co.uk/uk/choosea.asp Thanks a lot for the replies. -- __Jambers__ -----please de-MUNG address to reply----- |
