Default Jay T's Big Saturday Workout and 50K Club Report 1-3,4-04

Jay T's Big Saturday Workout 1-3-04:
The temp was around 10F with a strong wind and solid ice for snow
conditions. I skipped skiing and cleaned the home office and installed
the software for my scanner in the new computer (which I've had over a
year). It took three tries installing the software and 4 tries
checking program compatability to get the thing to work (about 1 1/2
hours). I don't know what was wrong with it and I don't know how I
fixed it...

50K Club Report Sunday 1-4-04:
I drove to the Blue Hills 14K Freestyle Race in Bruce, Wisconsin with
John O'Connell ($163 speeding ticket. OUCH!) and Bill Kosfeld. The
trail system is fabulous and the event draws skiers from all over
Wisconsin and Minnesota. I finished 31st out of 104 skiers, 32nd out
of 120 if you count the women. Kim Ruud got me by 15 seconds and she
fell down twice! You can guess from Kim falling down that the trail
was icy. They got rain Friday and today the temp was 9F at the start.
They tried to bust up the trail but it was pretty icy and hard to get
an edge. There's a wicked S turn downhill that just about got me. I
had to plow hard on the left side to avoid going off the trail. I
wound up spinning aroound and facing back up the hill only to watch
two guys pass me. One was from my wave so he wound up beating me. He
was fantastic on the downhills and said that was his specialty. The
other guy was from the wave in front of me so I was already ahead of
him on time. What goes around comes around though because a skier who
was a little stronger than me wiped out on the flats. I passed him and
stayed in front of him the rest of the way. My time was 38:43. Matt
Liebsch, the kid who was asking basic ski questions on this newsgroup
last year, won the race. He's only been racing 5 years! You either
have the talent or you don't... Other fast guys included Tom Krenz,
Dale Niggeman, Dennis Kotcon, Bob Peterson, Kevin Rogers, Dave
Christopherson, Henry Walker, Michael O'Connor, Steve Sonnesyn, Scott
Chapin, Tom Meyer and Tim Trudeau. I placed 12th in the 40-49 age
group. I'm 46 and a bunch of the fast guys are 40-44. Complain.
Complain. Complain. I know... Jay Wenner and Pat Lorentz showed up but
decided not to race based on the icy conditions.
