Default Volkl 5 Star (2004/5) problem

I bought a new pair of Volkl 5 Star Supersports (the red ones) in November
2004. There are terrific skis, with only one issue for me. Has anyone else
experienced the same problem, to wit:

The red coloring topping seems to be chipping off right around the tails. I
had it epoxied once by the shop at Northstar, but it comes back. I'm
concerned that this is a problem with the lamination of the top coat and is
just the beginning. Has anyone else had a similar problem? If so, what did
you do about it?

If it is just my skis, then it sure sounds like a warranty return to me.

Thanks.

No it's not just your skis. I've looked at three friends' 5 Stars and they
were all chipped to some extent. I assume it's from sticking them in the
snow.
On mine, the top skin on the tail of one ski is chipped. The other ski is
actually delaminating. My shop sent them back to Volkl last week. I'll
post the outcome when I hear back from them.

Just talked to the shop and Volkl "fixed" my skis. Sounds like they just
epoxied the top skin. The shop isn't charging to remount the bindings, so
my cost was $35 for shipping.
We'll see if the repair holds.......

Thanks for the update. If that's all Volkl is going to do, then the shop at
Northstar can do that for $10 a pop. I guess the thing to do is to keep on
top of it, even to the extent of doing the epoxy job as part of preparing
the skis for over summer storage.

I have a pair that have been skied about 20 days. They are not chipping
but I am very careful not to slam them into the concrete or jam
the tails into the snow. You can tell that they are vulnerable to
chipping in that area. They should have been capped in some fashion like
the tips IMHOP. Glad you wrote about it.

Just noticed that my wifes volkl energy skis are rubber capped on the
tail. They should have capped the 5 stars also.

Top skins are just cosmetic. Don't sweat the small stuff, worry about
your bases; better, treat the ski as a consumable, not as an investment,
and you'll be happier.

Get a can of flat black paint, spray some on the tops of your skis and
you won't notice the chipping AND you'll have the added benefit of no
one stealing your skis.

Or, if you want to look like a cool ski insider, use flat white paint -
those flat white painted skis you occasionally see around are next
year's models loaned to select ski insiders for evaluation.

Amen! I tell this to people who get all bent out of shape about nicks
and scratches. I doubt many listen, but it's good advise.

Now to truly treat skis as consumables it helps to be able to get them
cheap somehow. I frequent end of season sales, swaps, and demo racks and
this makes it much easier to donate an old ski to a fence project when
it's time.

Matt (never paid more than about $250 for a new pair of skis)
