Switzerland: Best new year skiing for years
Just returned from 1 week in Emmetten (Klewenalp) and 1 week in
Lauterbrunnen (Jungfrau region). The best new year snow I can remember. So much for global warming! Admittedly they didn't have the base they would like, and the snow was thin in places, but it was good quality stuff - none of the ice and slush we'd become accustomed to in recent years. In fact it was so good, we may try harder to get a week in somewhere over Easter than previous years... we never quite managed 2 ski holidays in one year before! "So much for global warming" Precisely what the experts say you get
with global warming a thawed hill/mountain with bigger & bigger dumps of rain (snow in mountains) which in turn will create acute avalanche's situation in the winter & mud & rock slides in the off-season . Expect more winters like 1999 in the future Powder Heaven ! nigel Adrian D. Shaw wrote: Just returned from 1 week in Emmetten (Klewenalp) and 1 week in Lauterbrunnen (Jungfrau region). I had last season no problem. :-) The point is: to know were to go. Johannes |

Expect more winters like 1999 in the future Powder Heaven ! Not quite sure what you mean by that - and my comment was rather tongue- in-cheek: I accept that global warming is probably happening. It was interesting however to see on the Swiss news that whilst we were there, the whole of Switzerland was at one point covered with snow; something that apparently hasn't happened for many years. It's been strange though, there's really been hardly any depth to the snow at all but we've had some regular smaller falls of snow, for example a lot of the top of Flaine wasn't open over Xmass/New Year as they're were gaping holes in the pistes where the fissures in the rock are. Nevertheless, some really enjoyable skiing as has been said. It was around the same at the weekend, we skied near Gstaad on Saturday and it was great but there's hardly any base at all, but great skiing again. Conditions did look good for the weekend...but... I've just been called out and driving from home at 0300am local time here in Switzerland (Fribourg direction, around 600m ) it's 10'c which is a bit warm really :-) |

It was so warm that we had the windows open. Let's hope it doesn't do too much damage before the colder weather returns Thursdayish. Pete Pete |
