Newbie Question

Hello All I am new to the sport and have decided to purchase a board but am
not sure which one's are best I am looking for a nice board that will last I
plan to do some rec snowboarding along with trying the pipes and stuff.

I my area ( Canada ) their is a Sports Mart and Sports Chek
which have some nice selections but I am not sure what manufacture to look
at and which ones to rule out here are some of the choices.

Firefly ( don't think this is any good )
LTD
Vision
Sims
Kemper
K2
Rosenole ( spelling )

Any suggestions would be appreciated

P.S. how do you determine which size of snowboard to get ?

It's based on your weight and the characteristics of the board that you're
buying. One manufacturer's 158 is another's 162.

Hi Will, I live in a town of less than 100,000 in Canada and even we have
more than a Sport Check or Sport Mart. Look in the phone book for
skateboard or snowboard shops. I can't emphasize how much you should stay
away big box sport stores for snowboards. I have been snowboarding for a
long time and most of those guys don't know what they are talking about at
those stores. One day they're selling golf clubs and the next day they're
selling snowboards.
Also bear in mind alot of those guys are on commission too, they will try to
sell you what they want you to buy not what you need.
And never ***ever*** get your board tuned at SportCheck. If you ask I'll
tell you about it but otherwise I would rather not get into it now.
You are much better going to a snowboard/skateshop. The shop staff selling
snowboards actually *ride snowboards*
Would you get advice on the best computer for you and buy it from someone
who has never used a computer before?

I second that, big time. Here in the US it's so called "Sears syndrome"
where 1 company is trying to get into every possible business. So they're
actually selling everything, but don't know anything. Stay away
from these busineses! Same apply to specialty sports (like snowboarding)
and generic sport marts. They might sell snowboard equipment, but they
don't know anything about it. You want to deal with people who know
the sport. If you cannot find a local shop, find one online - you can
always talk to a representative over the phone.
