NNN Auto Bindings
I have NNN auto bindings on my skis and find them a hassle to
get into particularly in deep snow. Is there a way to simplify getting into them? I would prefer manual bindings but they are not as readily available. What is the advantage of auto bindings over manual bindings? |

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii To avoid floundering in deep snow, trample a spot down before you take the skis off, and stand in that spot to put the skis back on. The advantage of auto bindings is that they are "easy" and "automatic", but what I find is that they are more prone to getting packed up with snow or ice, and can be actually harder to get in and out of. I think they look "easier" in the store, which is where the sale is made. Maybe "automatic" is named to appeal to people who don't know how to drive a stick shift! ;- ) Chris Author wrote: I have NNN auto bindings on my skis and find them a hassle to get into particularly in deep snow. That's what I've been told, but I've had Salomon auto bindings on my rock and touring skis for years and have never had a problem w/ icing. Eddie Luban |

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii I've never used the Salomons, so perhaps I should add that my remarks are specific to the NNN-BC automatic (which, I've heard, may not be a currently available binding). my apologies- Chris Eddie Luban wrote: On 19 Dec 2003, at 13:06, Chris Cline wrote: The advantage of auto bindings is that they are "easy" and "automatic", but what I find is that they are more prone to getting packed up with snow or ice, and can be actually harder to get in and out of. That's what I've been told, but I've had Salomon auto bindings on my rock and touring skis for years and have never had a problem w/ icing. _ There are two things going on here. 1. Ice and snow in the binding. _ As long as you remember to grease the binding with a good cold weather grease at the start of the season ( Garage door opener grease works well. ) you should have no problems with the binding icing up. Or a least none that a few well placed whacks won't solve. 2. Ice and snow on the boot. _ This is always a problem, although I think the Salomn version is a bit better because it's wider and has a wedge shape that is easier to pop out. For NNN/BC it's convient to carry a small piece of plastic[1] that just fits in the slot over the bar. In deep snow the trick is to use the plastic to pop the snow out and then directly step on the binding before you step down in the snow again and pack it up again. In really deep snow, I tend to work on things one ski at a time, i.e. get things setup so that you can easily pop the snow out and get into the binding for one ski and then setup again to get the next ski. _ Lastly, there is the trick of putting the tail in the snow so the ski sticks up at about a 30 degree angle, you then step in the binding and kind of "push forward". This works really well with alpine step-in bindings but can be adapted to NNN/BC auto bindings. _ Booker C.
