Default cracked bales on Rotefella Super Tele 3 pins

just had to alter a tour quite a bit when my wife's Rotefella Super
Telemark 3 pin bindings failed within a few days of each other. They
were being used on fairly normal nordic tourers (Morotto Jokylkyrkkjas)
with Crispi CX-T light plastic boots, touring waymarked routes with
nothing aggressive going on (kick 'n' stick over rolling country with
turns usually wedges on fairly easy slopes). Weather wasn't anything
out of the ordinary, with temperatures around freezing when they went.

In each case the bale cracked and broke between the hinge and the centre
notch-post, and we managed to ski on (carefully!) for several km with
just one side and the notch fastening holding things together before we
could replace the bindings.

The bindings are 4 years old, this was their third big tour (plus quite
a few days there and here). I use the same model on similar skis and
with fairly similar boots (original brown T3s) and haven't had any trouble.

We suspect it was just a Late Friday Afternoon pair and will be sending
them back to Rotefella to see what they think, but I wondered if anyone
else had had a similar problem?

Pete.

Sounds like a dud pair. I was out a few days ago on a pair of "rock "
skis with those bindings dating from 1987! The bindings are still fine.
They must have had many months of use.

Thanks for the data point Chris, everyone who looked at them was quite
surprised... First up, a group of engineers who arrived at Rauhellern
after we'd limped in there (and who did an artful bodge with an old
bucket handle to help hold it together so we could get back to Tuva),
and then the folk at Tuva who replaced it. We'd assumed that would be
that, but the second went the next day so we diverted to Haugestol where
they had a new pair sent up from Geilo for us. Subsequent surprised
inspectors noted a hairline the side that hadn't given way on the second
one, so I suspect we were lucky we got as far as Haugestol with it!

It did mean our plan of crossing Hardangervidda was a bit of a partial
success, but we managed to salvage something in Skarvheimen on the
replacement set and still had a good tour.

Pete.

Contacted Rottefella with a brief report and some pictures, no reply as
yet.
Does anybody have any experience with their customer services, and/or a
more direct contact email address than the general one on the website?

Next step will be to run it through the shop where I bought the skis and
bindings, though they are a 2 hours drive away so I hope we can do this by
phone and email!

Roos
