Default Best Places to Stay at Lake Tahoe

You should really check in with the casinos. They usually have the best
prices and have "stay and ski" packages with deals worked out with all the
ski areas. Most offer shuttle services to and from the casinos and the ski
areas. I recently stayed in Reno with my wife at the Sands Regency for $29
a night midweek. Since they will do the commuting for you, staying either in
Reno or on the South Shore is my choice.

My connection to highway 80 is at Vallejo. The shortest route to snow
takes me to the Northshore. All other routes add time to the drive. So,
my preference is the north sho Sugar Bowl and Northstar (my favorites),
Homewood, and Squaw.

Unfortunately, accomodations at the northshore are minimal. There's the
totally out of my price range accomodations at Squaw. There's the zero
night life, but almost affordable Holiday Inn Express (a great place to
get some sleep). There's the Best Western, almost affordable, but the
walls are paper thin so even someone just hangin' out and watching TV and
having a few laughs is loud enough to keep the neighbors awake.

What are some better accomodation options? How much driving time will it
add to my road trips in order to stay somewhere affordable with a little
night life.

There's Wayne's idea of the casinos in Reno - pretty cheap, but add
30min plus each way to the drive, and to each slope visit.

But really, if you're going to be a skier, you need to figure out a
place to stay all winter, every weekend. Try to hook up with a ski lease
- lots of them in Tahoe Donner north-west of Truckee. With a ski lease,
you always have a pre-paid place to stay, probably someone to ski with
if your flatland buddies don't want to make the trip, and a place to
store your gear and winter clothes. I don't know your situation, but
many ski lease organizers accept singles as well as couples and some
even accept kids. Cheaper than lodging if you go allot and since it's
prepaid it encourages you to go allot. Coupled with a season pass it's
by far and away the cheapest way to get 50-60 days even as a weekender
and holiday skier.

Look around - I've seen recent bulletin board ads for additions to
established ski leases.
