Base Repair Questions. (epoxy, p-tex, home weld?)
Okay, I have home waxing down now, which kicks ass. My board performs
great and it actually feels faster and more responsive than a shop wax. Now I have some base repair to do. I searched the history and read lots of tips about getting the p-tex to burn blue so I'll try those tips and the ones on the donek website. I have a deep gouge, something I should take into a shop, but, I would really like to learn this myself. So humor me... I have a gouge at the edge of my board. Actually, its a weld from a shop that has popped out, so, its already cut, cleaned, and unfortunately I can see the metal edge and such. Do I p-tex right to this or should I throw a thin layer of epoxy or something down first so there is a non-metal surface to grip on. (its not all metal, but at least 50%). Any tips on the type of epoxy shops use would be appreciated. Second, once I do the p-tex, do I carefully scrape this even with my base? Should I do something to the p-tex to roughen it up and put a little structure on it? The repair site is the size of half a dime. This is what I'm planning...tell what's wrong with it. - add a thin layer of epoxy. - let dry, and roughen the surface so p-tex can stick to it - heat base repair area with my iron - get p-tex burning blue and carbon free - fill area, let dry - scrape, figure out how to add some structure - wax - ride - pray it doesn't fall it in the middle of a 6 day trip coming up! Thanks in advance for any tips, -todd |
