Default Storing skis in roof box

If I put dry skis in the roof box on my car a week before I travel (when its
convenient to pack) will I rust my edges? I am concerned that water will
condense as the temperatures go up and down during the day, the water won't
drip off because the skis are horizontal and then I'll have rust. I once
left wet skis in my roof box and trashed the edges so I'm trying to be a bit
more careful. Any thoughts/experience?

If you are packing this week for a trip next week, you
are going far enough so that you will some protection
for edges AND bindings. At the very least, a cloth binding
cover is in order. A full ski bag is better. You are not
worried about wet, you are worried about salt. But the
wet spray has salt in it, so at least water repellent is
required. A heavy coat of wax will protect edges for a
trip. Have you shop do a "spring wax" and the edges will
be OK. If you are traveling for more than one day, bring
the skis in off the car to the motel room and wipe them
dry. Get the salty water off them.

When you get to your destination, scrape the wax mostly off,
then ski.

I don't own a exterior ski rack. I always carry my skis
inside the car. If I were to be traveling a lot with skis,
I'd have one of those "rocket boxes" on my car for
protection.

I think that was what he was asking about ..... a roof box, not a ski
rack. So, he is, or should be, worried about wet rather than salt, I
think.

It prolly depends on the temp range at least somewhat.

Other than that, dead on

Wax the edges before storing them.

I think your concerns are valid. Few of those boxes are sealed well
enough to keep out humidity.

Doesn't take much to rust that type of steel.

Happy trails,

Oops, I missed reading that you already had a roof
box. The trouble here is that the roof box will hold
moisture in, as long as it gets out, then OK.

Yeh -- get a mover's pad (you can buy 'em at a uhaul store), fold it and
put it in the box. Then, if you're going to leave the skis in there for
an extended period of time, separate 'em and let 'em rest base down on
the pad.

The pad is a good idea anyway, to keep stuff from banging around like crazy.

He has one of those "rocket boxes" (see topic). Salt shouldn't be an issue.

Get an old iron and some canning parafin from the grocery store and melt
on a good healthy coat of wax on bottoms and edge sides both. Take the
iron and parafin with you for the return trip.

BTW, you should do this in the spring also, before storing your skis for
the summer.
