Bodensteiner's other comments (see fasterskier.com) pointed out the
obvious, that Nystad married German Claudia Kuenzel last summer and
that the sprint coach had only promised two seasons. I don't know, but
perhaps more significant is Chris Hall, the wax tech, moving on after
one season.

From the posting on the USST's site:

"We've had four outstanding years from Trond. He and Pete and Vidar
have put the cross country program on track for what we feel will be
some great success. But it's a demanding job and Trond got married last
summer [to German star Claudia Kuenzel] and he's decided to move on to
other things," Bodensteiner said. "We're fortunate to have had him for
these four years. And the same for Vidar; he said he'd give us two
years and he's more than delivered on what we thought could be a very
promising program. Obviously, we wish them both all the best."

Being a wax tech has got to be one of the worst jobs in skiing.

I thought I heard Chris is now with Swix. On the Team FSX or Zach's
website, earlier this year, someone described the domino effect in US noridc
circles this year with folks moving to new jobs. I remember Chirs Hall, Eli
Brown and I think Roger Knight being involved in this but my memory could be
pretty fuzzy.

Hallsey was with the National team for a lot more than just one year.
He was on the staff in 2002, and I think he may have started a year
before that. He's got a young daughter at home and I don't know how he
managed to hang with it even for this season. He's taken the Fischer
race service director position that Eli Brown left in the Fall.

There used to be a saying in photography, if you like to take pictures,
don't get in the business. Since I've never talked to a wax tech,
here's what I _think_ the position involves:

-Lots of travel
-Weird work hours, such as waxing all night, and then rewaxing in the
morning when the conditions suddenly change
-Horrible work conditions (repirators are probably not good enough, you
probably need a fully contained air supply)
-Some thanks if you hit the wax, complaints if you slightly miss the
wax, and dead silence if you really miss the wax
-Not enough help to test skis
-Poor pay?
-Seasonal work

I read on Teamtoday.org that Carl's last World Cup race was at
Holmenkollen a couple days ago. He is hanging 'em up and going to law
school. He put together a nice career on skis and mtb.

Actually, Gary, on looking at the first two parts of the interview with
Trond Nystad at fasterskier.com, you may be very right about burnout -
in the more substantial sense.
