TR - finishing the loop

Are you home yet? If so, how was the trip? Noticed that the snow was following you. Good for locals, but not good for you. Yeah - had to leave town each time to allow the dumps an opportunity to dump. Let's see - been to Jackson, moved to Utah, last report I think was Alta? OK. We tried Solitude - better than Alta, although still skiing hardpack. Found a few soft spots in the Headwall Forest trees, just enough to flavor a run with awkward recoveries, and some decent turns on Black Bess in the shade at the head of Honeycomb. The groomed was much better than Alta's equivalent, which was pretty much all that really could be said. Then we had an epiphany: if we were going to ski hardpack anyway, why not go where they specialize in hardpack and grooming? And besides we'd never been to Deer Valley! So that's what we did; and guess what - it's everything we imagined. The grooming is way better than nearby resorts and the slopes make our local Flatstar look positively precipitous. Also somewhat surprising to me (I expected rich, well lessoned, and feathers and furs dressed) the clientel was largely appropriately skilled for the slopes and dressed for Texas. But we had fun; saw something off to the left from a chair that the Map called Daly Chutes and rated as double diamonds so I traversed over there and found a good 200 feet of vertical nearly challenging enough to slow down for. The food was good; and the restaurants provided patrons with Wall Street Journals to read with their soup. Then we visited a friend in Park City for the evening and he inevitably mentioned he had seen on the News feature the previous night that the wildflowers were peaking in Death Valley; So off to Death Valley we go, with a stop at Zion for some hiking and a stop in Vegas for some sleeping. The flowers were spectacular, as promised. Worth the drive. No snow, though. Hiked a bit, sightsaw, and slowly worked our way home up the eastern Sierra. Excellent road trip; and we have fresh snow to greet us upon our return home. |

(snip) Excellent road trip; and we have fresh snow to greet us upon our return home. Nice!!! Also, glad to hear good things about Dear Valet. I corresponded with a lady for a while back when I was single. She liked the place. Uhm, she was from Texas. One thing I heard about DV was that you could pretty much find pow several days after the storm. The patrons didn't know how to ski the stuff. |
