Default Uphill, downhill, slalom XC event? ...Skiathlom?

I remember they used to have a series of XC races where you skied
uphill, downhill and thru some gates. I thought it was called the
Timex Skiathlom. Now I see that's just a watch they sell. I also
recall some YouTube videos showing this event. I remember doing this
event at a Birkie and maybe at a Natl's once. Anyone know more? Links?

Yeah, telemark fests have up/down races with gates.

But I did two events where everyone used skating skis and I recall
seeing videos of a Red Bull series or something, held at a resort --
also on racing skating skis.

I know they've had a traditional race from Alta to Brighton (in Utah)
over the mountains, where the skiers could use any kind of gear they wanted.

I also saw a few years ago the invitation for a very seriously up&down
race from the bottom of the Alta lifts, it looked like it was designed
for mountain gear+skins, but it looked like a good skier on
lightweight/racing gear could do very well.

The events I did and which I saw on videos were done on a 1/4-km loop
in sight of a base lodge. Designed for Action, Thrills and
Spectating.

A circle with a short uphill then a downhill with jumps and gates,
short flat sections.

Maybe not a genius concept, but pretty fun.

I maybe like the idea of a bigger course that includes a wide variety
of typical challenges -- maybe even set up like a very old style ski
course. When the Olympics were first held weren't Downhill, Jumping
and XC all one event? I like the idea of a ski event where many skills
are done on the same pair of skis. It doesn't have to be huge distance
or epic terrain, though.

First the funny part from the Onion:
http://www.theonion.com/content/news..._olympic_event

I ski up an down some modest downhill runs (200 to 300ft elevations)
and to me it is kind of like that hill climb bmx bicycle event. I
would love to see an Olympic uphill downhill event. I guess a
sanctioned by anybody event would be cool too. Just fun to watch and
do.

Question - a couple of the skate skiers at my little downhill run ski
down doing what look to be "hop christies" no snow plow to wedge
turn. They go fast and can carve pretty tight.

Is this hard on a skate ski?

I am in back country gear but learning to skate and don't want to
trash my gear (once I buy some)

I once saw a telemark race on Austrian television. Might have been Eurosport, also. Alpine-style dressed downhill telemark slalomming was followed by skate-climbing around alpine gates. Totally awesome, one could not look away from those races.

All skiing is easy after you try it a bit. Doncha think?

Skis can handle a lot but not outrageous abuse. Beware rocks/dirt/
gravel. If you do any jumping make sure it's a downhill landing and
your skis will be fine. If you hit overly soft/deep snow with a lot of
force that could be trouble. I broke skis that way once, anyway---in a
skiathlom! There was a soft snow pit after a big jump, hollowed out by
bad skiers, on flat terrain and my skis just collapsed in the middles.
If snow is too hard/harsh and you do fast turns---that could be bad,
too---they probably don't have mighty edges/sidewalls. I did the
Winter Mt Man in Vail once and took the big blue run downhill from the
top of the ski area really fast -- crashed a bit, too -- and both skis
had tails flapping in the wind at the finish. But I added some
fiberglass and epoxied them back and used them for years! Did good on
em, too!

Wow that was one heck of a ride! Great to know about the resilency of
skate skis. My philosophy on these little downhills is "carve often
and use as much of the hill width as possible." I like a long ride
down ;-)

The up/down/jumps/group xc race event is the Redbull NordiX. There are
vids on YouTube for it.

Like skicross only on XC skis.

(The weird thing is that the vids are kinda new but I thought I saw
vids for this like 5 years ago...)
