Default Ski Tunnel

People skate in circles in ~half acre ice rinks for an hour in a row
and don't seem to get bored. Social interactions (dating? looking
after kids?) do play a major role here. Music does help.

If the weather is right, I ski on weekends in the winter. If there

Also, if there was good outdoor skiing on the weekends an hour away
(which there is sometimes) I'd skip the tunnels on weekends. But that
would probably mean it was especially cold or snowy, and so I'd
probably not ride the bike at all midweek and would be in the ski
tunnel twice midweek.

Default Ski Tunnel

I think skiers like to go places. Skiers are the type of people that
would rather do a hike in the mountains than run on a treadmill. On a
treadmill, mag trainer, nordic track, anything stuck in a room, I can
last about 30 min. If I had to do every workout this way, I'd need
professional help. Next to our 2 km aritificial snow loop, there's
some big loops for natural snow. Quite often I bring the rock skis and
head out on the big loops even if I have to walk across bare sections.
It much more interesting.

Riding a bike outside in the winter is not very comfortable, but I'd
rather do that than ski a 1 km loop in a tunnel. 2km is better, 3 km
better yet, but just think about the refrigeration costs and laying
all that pipe. Indoor ice is expensive, and you better have a
guarenteed return on the big buck input, and I don't think it's
there.

I'm getting the feeling the xc races are changing too. The guys I race
against historically were very consistent with training, and they did
a lot of ski training during the off season. Now I think the guys are
joking around more, lipping-off during races, and hardly doing any off-
season ski training. Tri's, running, cycling, and come November, try
getting on artificial snow. That's the new ski training.

.... Are they simply... um... getting old, Jay?

Yes, but maybe I speak only for me.

Default tunnel vs treadmill

treadmill running? - I'd rather get fat and lazy, maybe start smoking

tunnel skiing? - I'd do it for hours on end.

I can ski a little self-packed 200m loop for hours on end on our local golf
course - no music needed, no people but me. Why? how?

here's my take on it - do one loop double pole easy, do next one with legs
only, do next one double pole HARD, do next one easy classic, do next one
easy, do next one all out with legs and arms, do next one double pole easy,
etc etc. Each loop is like a new loop doing it this way. a treadmill run
is pure boredom with a tv. yuck.

i'll take a tunnel any day !!

I think you just defined diehard skier with that post. Every ski shop in
the country is holding out hope that there are many more like you out there.

Personally that wouldn't work. I've done similar things but only in the
early season when I know real snow is just around the corner. If skiing for
me was reduced to a 2K loop or tunnel, I would still ski but probably only
occaisionally. Given the choice of a 1 1/2 hour running loop through some
trees or 10 laps around a 2K loop, 9 of 10 times I would lace up the shoes.

For me the bigest draw of skiing is being active in the woods in the winter.
If I can't get that on skis, I'll find some other way to get the woods fix.

Dave

p.s. Heard your IR trip was a blast.

I"m not even talking 2km DMK, I'm talking endless loops on 200 METERS up and
back on my golf course fairway !!! Of course this is early season skiing
before the grooming takes place but I"ll take that over running any day.

Our local city groomed classic ski trail is 2km and I ski it ENDLESSLY all
winter. Its groomed impeccably and lighted. I skied it 95% of my skiing
last winter. To me its like you don't even have to think about where you
are going, you just get in a zone and kick double pole, double pole, kick,
like drugs only better.

JKal.

PS. Isle Royale from a CANOE is the ONLY way to go !!!!!! no backpack to
carry !! no sweating !!
sweet trip, and met ur baby ! cute little guy !

Yeah, 1K of perfect grooming with lights would have me out twice a
week all winter long. Maybe even 500M if it was well designed.

If that was the only skiing I had I would probably ski it more than I think.
Let's just hope it's a while before it comes to that in the Keweenaw.

If you like IR by canoe, you should try it by kayak. I always enjoyed my
visits to the island but it wasn't until we started kayaking that I really
loved it. Paddling around the north shore is truly one of my favorite trips
ever. Convince Ann to orgainze a kayak circumnavigation of the island! That
is a fabulous trip.
