Ask rs Orelle
Has anyone any details of the link from Orelle to Val Thorens ?
We will be driving to Italy via the Frejus tunnel next month and were thinking of stopping off and having a day's skiing with BrratSki who will be in VT. I seem to recall hearing that the gondala takes quite a time to make the trip and that the last ride back is quite early. Anyone have any details ? TIA Rog |

Rosael closes at 1600 before 9th Feb, this is the key lift to VT. Cima Caron closes at 1545, this is the key phrique back to Orelle. Try and get the itinary down the Bouchet Glacier ticked off!! -- Mike W |

It's just a normal télécabine from the Maurienne valley with a car park right next to it, which connects with the Rosael chair to drop you into VT proper, or the Peyron and Bouchet chairs for sking in the Maurienne side. Skiing on this side can be quite good, on- and off-piste, but it's in the sun so not so good if conditions are warm and wet. We will be driving to Italy via the Frejus tunnel next month and were thinking of stopping off and having a day's skiing with BrratSki who will be in VT. It's really as simple as it sounds. No hassle at all. I seem to recall hearing that the gondala takes quite a time to make the trip and that the last ride back is quite early. Anyone have any details ? Last ride back down was around 1615 early season, 1645 later on when I last used it, but check with the lift company for details. On the 2005/6 skimap I have it seems that the Grand Fond lift - right ? Approx how long would it take us to get there from Orelle (are there Qs at the start of the day ?) compared to son who will be coming up from Reberty/Les Menuires ? I would guess we'd be quicker so might be better to meet in VT centre somewhere... |

In fact, you can probably find all you need to know at http://www.valthorens.com//home/wint...lle-145-2.html Thanks Ace, just the sort of info I want - that there are no hassles. I used it to access VT a few years back when we drove over from Valloire - we managed, just (we were only intermediates then) to ski to Courcheval and back in the day. I also used it to return from a couple of off-piste excursions down that side when repping there a couple of years back. And I skiied the top sections many times during that 3-week slot too. As I say, I've had no problems with it. The perrenial issue is people who mis-time their return to the Orelle side, but in practice the lift down will not close until everyone's off the hill, so as long as you get the last lift up from the VT side you're guaranteed a return journey down. Probably planning to ski a couple of runs up in that area later on is a good precaution. On the 2005/6 skimap I have it seems that the Grand Fond lift - right ? Oops, that should have said "Rosael lift seems to come out at the top of the Grand Fond lift - right ?" You are correct. It's not actually right next to it, but it's just a bit of a push from either side to get round the corner and across; only a couple of minutes either way. The interactive map on the VT site is pretty accurate there. Getting back to Orelle can also be done from the Caron telepherique, leading to a nice bit of off-piste (in the right conditions) or black mogul skiing. Approx how long would it take us to get there from Orelle (are there Qs at the start of the day ?) compared to son who will be coming up from Reberty/Les Menuires ? TBH I'm not sure, but if you allowed an hour to get from Orelle into VT proper I'm fairly sure you'd be fine. I would guess we'd be quicker so might be better to meet in VT centre somewhere... Quicker than coming from VT? I would have thought it about equal, TBH. Probably 45 mins from either side should be enough (but don't quote me). On the VT side the map's a bit misleading - from VT centre ski all the way through the village and down to La Moutiere chair, which then allows you to ski straight to the Funitel Grand Fond. -- Ace (brucedotrogers a.t rochedotcom) Ski Club of Great Britain - http://www.skiclub.co.uk All opinions expressed are personal and in no way represent those of the Ski Club. |
