I prefer the ski areas that have maybe a couple 1000 beds at most
located 10-30 miles way and none at the base. Can you say no lift
lines? I don't care for the mega ski resorts much. Have to pay twice
as much just to stand in a long lift line and ski through 1000's of
people all over the slopes.

Sounds about right for a fine ski experience.

How soon before they start discussing their "back bowls" and "sno-cat
tours?"

Indeed, but having a 1+ mile drop is uncommon for a 1000 bed village
mountain.

Right. Baker. Kirkwood would be another one that fits the description.
But I'd add to it that it has to have enough bad-ass terrain to qualify.

Thats true being the greatest drop in the USA is about 4300' at Big Sky.
Many don't ski top to bottom in a single run at some of the mega
resorts I've been too. Not sure I can handle more than 3000' vertical
in a single run these days!

At Whistler, I always have to have at least one run from top to bottom with
my buddies. See who makes it down first, and still has enough leg strength
to do another.

A good 10-15 minutes straight that you don't have to wait in line!
