There you go there's a plugin for VirtualDub (freeware) called Deshaker:

Deshaker is pretty good... it's certainly exciting (to a point watching
it analyse the vectors and show the areas of motion. It's certainly one
of the better ones, but again cannot cope in all situations. I'd
recommend it, but wouldn't rely on it.

LOL, I thought the same thing when I saw it working on the video. But
then I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to stuff like that.

I admit I thought that it is no simple feat and I thought the same thing
about it cropping the bits that go off the edges. That got me thinking
about how you could use the other frames to extrapolate the missing bits....

I was quite impressed with Deshaker, especially as it's free. I plan to
fiddle with the settings a bit more so see what can be done, but it
definitely improves things especially if I want to author a VCD for
non-computer literate mates. Like you say though, I wouldn't rely on it
for doing anything serious.

Does AVID have a plug-in that would work?

No idea. I haven't used Avid for ages. Try one of the specialist video
newsgroups.

Virtual Dub works on AVI files, which is fine if your working with those
kinds of files anyway. I don't know if it will work with the format that
Avid likes them in (OMF, if I recall). If not, you'd need to convert one
way then the other.
