Equipment for Cross Country Skiing (package)

I would like to start cross country skiing. I have always been a down
hill skier but now I would like to try something different. Is there
a sports chain that offer a package of skis, shoes and poles?

Where are you located? In some parts of the U.S., stores such as EMS
(Eastern Mountain Sports) and REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) have
cross-country skis at some of their stores. In addition, some places have
good local stores.

rec.skiing.Nordic will also have lots of comments to offer, once they know
where you are, what type of skiing you think you want to do (race, skate,
classic stride, touring the woods (ungroomed trails), telemark, overnight
backcountry, etc); all affect what kind of set might be recommended.

Paco's in Truckee, if you're anywhere near there. They do nothing but
cross country and lower-level backcountry (in the winter anyway) and
have a variety of packages for different levels. Probably have a web
site, but I haven't checked.
