I'm in the same boat as you. I read an earlier posting on the same topic and
totally agree that it is better to hang on to as late as possible and keep
an eye on the snow reports. I remember one year (I think it was 98) over
Xmas when France had little snow and Austria was forecasting a big dump
imminently. I plumped for Austria (Soll) and got there the day the snow
dropped big time - I had a week of fantastic skiing where a week before
people were out hiking. Same again about 3 yrs ago - I ended up in Mayrhofen
when the French resorts were struggling.

I always head for the Teletext ads, and have had some great deals eg 1 week
catered chalet, flights and transfers for less than £400.

Obertauern is a snow-hole. It always has good late season snow. You wont be
disappointed!

Normally I'd say not to worry, March is fine for skiing in just about
any major resort. However, this year has been pretty weird so far, with
rain in January, then a lot of snow, then temps in the mid-teens
(celsius), then cold again... who knows what it will be like in March.

If you need to book now just book somewhere high up and you should be
fine. If you can book a few days before just check the local snow
reports before you pay up.

I've had some great skiing in March, even in late March you can expect
decent snow cover. For what it's worth I've skied in St Anton (Austria)
in early-mid April (and once had over 1m of snow overnight at this time)
and I've skied in Val d'Isere in the first week in May. Chamonix is
often at it's best in March.
