Can I bring my FRS / GMRS Radio to Europe - Austria, Germany, Switzerland
I just bought a pair of FRS / GMRS radios and planning on bringing them
to Europe (i.e. Austra, Germany and Switzerland). Does anyone know if FRS legally being used in those countries? If so, if I purchase a GMRS license, am I going to be benefitted from the longer range reception from the GMRS in Europe? Thanks! |

Each country sets their own rules on VHF and UHF band plans, while international agreements are usually honored for the longer range HF frequencies. The final authority is the government agency in charge of radio broadcasting (comparable to the FCC), and a good resource would the national amateur radio clubs (comparable to the ARRL). IIRC, The US FRS and GMRS radios are NOT usable in Europe, although those manufacturers have similar models on the similar frequencies. Canada recently modified their rules so that US GMRS radios are now legal there (FRS already was). Happy trails, Gary (net.yogi.bear) -- At the 51st percentile of ursine intelligence Gary D.
