Last season gear at bargain prices in SE PA?
On 2 Sep 2003 15:25:02 GMT, Anna Nonamus penned:
I live in SE PA (Philadelphia, Allentown, Reading areas are all close by), .... when and where are the best times and places to find gear on sale from last season? I took up DH skiing last season, and rented equipment all season. Some friends in the know -- but who live in different parts of the country -- tell me the start of a new season is when great discounts are available on gear from last year, ... skis, boots, bindings, poles. So I'm looking for dates (early/mid/late september, october, etc.), store names, etc. Thanks. Labor day weekend seems to have caused all the ski shops here in Boulder, CO to announce their sales ... that being said, I bought new skis a few weeks ago, last season's model, at half price. There was no announced sale; I just walked in and asked what they had from last season. Sales start in the spring and work their way toward winter. You'll get the best selection in the spring; you'll get the best prices in the late fall. My suggestion would be to look around now. If money is tight, the lore I've always heard is to buy well-fitted boots first, then worry about the skis later. That being said, I found that there's a world of difference between rentals and owned skis, if only because the rentals seemed to use sandpaper as wax ... slow as hell. -- monique |

Who are you renting your skis from? It might be worth your while to try a few different shops, and give your business to the one that gives you the best maintained skis, even if it does cost a few more dollars. Rental fleet skis are very low performance skis; try "performance" or "demo" rentals. |
