But the crowd that never leaves the park would kill themselves!

You say that like it's a bad thing.

I hope you're joking, right?

The best thing about the park is that it greatly reduces the number of
kids sitting in the snow on the regular runs. I've never understood
parks myself, except at small hills. In the big hills, why would you
want to be there when there's a whole mountain to ride?

These are some of the factors that I usually think of (in ascending
order)

4. Doing jumps (not hiking) requires not very much energy... so you
can do it for a long time. Especially compared to high speed carves in
a hardboot setup.

3. Trails are super crowded, meaning you either have to ride slowly
and carefully, or endanger everyone on the slopes.

2. Jumps are fun, it's like hopping off over curbs on your bicycle or
jumping on a trampoline when you were a kid. There is a bit of a
community aspect to it as well as you cheer on your friends as you
hike the pipe.

1. Snow is crappy on the rest of the mountain, which was not uncommon
on the East Coast where I grew up. What good are the 100+ trails on
Killington (questionable counting) when 70% of them are ungroomed,
icy, and/or full of moguls.

As such, since I've moved out West, I've noticed I've spent a lot more
time all over the mountain and less time in the park. Still, if the
snow is icy or ridiculously slushy, I usually end up at the park
because they do a really good job grooming the park/pipe and it is
usually good even in the freezing rain.
