Default Report: Sunday River (Saturday 2/12/05)

Just a short update from the hills of New England. I took the bus up to
Sunday River today (Saturday 2/12/05) in great anticipation of some New
England powder. The Sunday River website claimed 25''-30'' of new snow, so
hopes were high for day 33 of the season.

South Ridge was very busy, but I had my mind set on the glade runs in Oz and
Jordan Bowl and quickly cleared the crowds. There was some nice, though
fairly heavy, untracked powder, but unfortunately it was nowhere near the
claimed snowmark (just like skiers like yours truly, skiing resorts also
love hyperbole). Still, some knee-deep fun was to be had on Caramba, Blind
Ambition, Ruby Palace and the closed unnamed run directly under the Aurora
Peak Quad. Alas, plenty of other skiers had the same idea and almost all of
the powder was skied off by 1pm.

I spent most of the afternoon in the terrain park on Barker getting the s**t
scared out of me by the last massive kicker before switching over for some
easy rail action and some 3s on the small kickers (none landed properly
though the 13-year old kids had a couple of helpful words of advice and were
greatly amused by my whining about twisted thumbs and hurting knees ...) on
White Cap. Good thing I didn't have a "cameraman" with me this time ...

All in all a pretty good day. Not quite the massive powder action I had
expected, but definitely the best day I've had in the East so far.

Best,
F

P.S.: And to round it all off, Austria took Gold and Silver in the Men's
Slalom at the World Championships thus easily winning the medals table. But,
alas, we failed miserably in the team event (I am now getting lots of verbal
abuse from my German friends ...)

Some days you're the windshield, other days you're the bug.

Thanks, but it really is all just skiing (and I assume I'm not as good at it
as most of the regulars in this group!).
