Another place to keep an eye on for skiing possibilities relative close
to home is http://www.skinnyski.com/trails/reports.asp (see bottom). I
know there's at least one regular Birkie skier who flies up from St.
Louis. Perhaps he's not doing it alone?

True - it did seem like the skating style would be more natural to me
- and I've been watching to see what the difference is, but from what
I read, the skating style can only be done on well groomed trails -
and that the classic style was better for new snow - is that correct?

Meg,

* Sounds great.

* Instructors (I'm one) usually tell new skiers to start with the
classical/diagonal striding style, i.e., what you're doing.
*However, with experienced skaters (ice or land), we pose the idea
of starting with ski skating instead (you may have seen both at the
Olympics). *Most adults need considerable acclimation to gliding on
one ski, but experienced skaters have already learned that and
developed the muscles to go along, so skating often makes a nice
place to start. *If you ever get the chance...

Thanks for the link. It's not entirely out of the realm of possibility
for me to drive in the direction of Chicago - there looked to be a
couple places East of Springfield - I don't know that I'd drive all
the way to Chicago though it's not that bad a trip from here.

Another person in the Chicago area who would probably be worth calling
for advice on places for help closer to St. Louis is Joe Gollinger,
http://www.cascoxc.com/ (he's in Naperville, a Chicago suburb). Tell
him I suggested calling (you probably won't need anything he's selling
at the moment, unless you like the Casco eyewear, which is actually
quite good).

Thanks for replying - sorry I didn't say I had it figured out and had
posted somewhere else. I wasn't quite sure anyone would see this older
post.
