Default 1ST TIME - DO WE NEED SKI PASSES

Hi all

Was going to ask all sorts of questions but will keep it short and
sweet for now.

1st time skiing (other than dry & snow dome etc) ... do we as a family
need to buy full lift passes given that we will only be on the
`learner slopes` for mots of the week I guess?

I imagine that full passes would be wasting money ... and I right?

Cheers
Graham

Short answer, yes full passes would be a waste of money.

Longer answer... what you do need depends where you go and how you get
on in the week, but most large resorts offer free or very cheap nursery
lifts. Once you get your ski legs and want to move on you may need a
full pass, depending on the area and what is available, but you won't
need this for the first few days.

Once you know where you are going I'm sure someone will be able to
advise on what pass(es) you will need. The local ski school will also
advise you once you are there but it's always good to have an idea of
what you are in for in advance.

Not available everywhere, but part-domain, reduced rate passes commonly
available. Some resorts also have a few free slopes for absolute
beginners. Depends just how much time you have spent at the snowdome ...
and where you are going. Full passes for the likes of the 3 Valleys for
example would be a waste. Where are you going?

A good example being your local slope. Spent a week at Les Arcs with a
mate who was just starting snowboarding and he used the free chairs all
week. It has to be said that he wasn't incredibly motivated and spent a
lot of time on terraces reading books... hey it was a holiday.

I would say you wouldn't want to buy a LP the first day and as Pete says
many resorts do limited domain passes which you can buy later in the week.

On the other hand, if you are going to ski school it would be a shame if you
only had a limited area pass and the instructor wanted to take you further
afield, perhaps to where the snow was better. My first week was in La
Plagne(Les Coches, actually) and we certainly covered the whole area in ski
school even as snow-ploughers going on stem christies.

Depends on the resort. Some resorts have a few free lifts serving the
beginner runs. However if you have skied on dry slopes and snowdome
you are likely to find they are not sufficient for you, particularly
if you a fit and naturally balanced. My first skiing holiday was
after about 15 hours of dry slope skiing and I was put with the second
year skiers.

I would speak to the rep when you arrive but would budget to that you
will need a lift pass, they may recommend that you don't get a lift
pass for the first couple of days and then buy a pass for the rest of
the week.

If the resort has a full area and local area pass the local area would
be fine.

If snow conditions are poor and there is not enough now in the resort
you may need a pass to get to the snow!

Depends on how adventurous you are. I'd skied a black run (and enjoyed
it) by the end of my first week's skiing.
