Default 1st class on Eurostar to Bourg Q

Hi,
We were told free meals with free wine,

Is the food nice?

How much wine do they give you?

Cheers, we've only done the "cheap" seats before.

Geoff

The food is the same as you get on a plane, the wine is served in minature
plastic bottles - absolute rip off. The seats are bigger than cattle class
and you have more leg room, but otherwise it is still a seat designed for a
2.5 hour London to Paris journey, not an 11 hour overnighter to the alps.

I've done the journey in both classes, and would always advise 1st class,
it's not worth the money, but better than the alternative.

The only reason to take the ski train is to get 8 days skiing for the price
of 6, but the journey is tiring.

If you can afford it at £320 return then do it - as you know cattle class
for £160 return is agony (people sleeping on tables, the floor, walkways
etc...)

Enjoy your skiing though, should be awesome after the snow of the last few
days.

We have just come back on the snow train from Bourg to Dover -
couchettes all the way. It was comfortable and convenient. The prices
are quite reasonable - see
http://www.raileurope.co.uk/skitrains/index.htm. £320 does seem rather a
lot for airline food and minature plastic bottles of wine. The food and
wine in Lanagans on the ferry appears good value at an average, IIRC, of
about £20 per head. The picnic of oysters, cold meat, cheese, bread etc.
and beer on the way back was perfectly adequate.

It appears that some thieves got on the train on the way down and stole
about £1000 in cash from unlocked compartments. We were informed that
they were apprehended the following week, but I would still anvocate
locking the compartment when asleep. Coming back was quiet and uneventful.

I think the food is better than on planes, but perhaps that's a comment
on how I fly :-) I find legroom a pain in standard Eurostar class, and
I'm not big, so it's worthwhile for that. I think the best way to do it
is to take 1st class to Paris, and get a couchette from there (1st class
couchettes with better bedding and only 4 to a compartment).

On the overnight train you get a cold supper & a hot breakfast.
On the daytime train you get a "three course" lunch.

We've just booked it for the first time (to go to Les Arcs), but for
the space & the reclining seats, not for the food!

Can you tell me more about this option: how do you book it? what does
it cost? is the change of trains in Paris straightforward? Are first
class couchettes that much better than standard class?

Regards

Rob

I've just come back from Tignes using a do it yourself option.

Fly to Paris then take the French sleeper to Bourg. This is cheeper
than Eurostar options with the French sleeper costing 40 Euro each
way. I travelled second class but only shared with one other person
going out and 3 others coming back. You can book from the SNCF
website hassel free and even print off your own tickets.

The train goes from Austerlitz so you need to change trains going from
CDG but it direct if you fly to Orly. If there is a group of you it
may be worth the extra to take a taxi to avoid having to take the RER.

Going out the train is due to arrive at exactly the same time as the
Eurostar and coming back it leaves at 2130 (the Eurostar leaves at
2220 but takes 2 hours to load due to baggage screening) so you can
probably travel to the resort with the Eurostar clients, if not
Autocars Martin offers a bus service (11.80 Euro to Tignes) or you can
take a taxi.
