Is Tahoe worthwhile in early May?
I know they will have snow (though I don't know if they will be
open...) but is good enough to be worthwhile? A friend wants me to come out and go skiing with him, but I won't have a chance until May. |

Current plans are Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Sierra at Tahoe, and Kirkwood. |

Spring corn used to be some of the easiest, most fun skiing there was. The "powder" in the trees that was allowed to sit and freeze/thaw until it would support a skier was magical. Unfortuneately it now gets hacked up by the two legged groomers that can stay on top of the heavy stuff and hack their way through. But aside from the inherent hassles of mixing sideways/backwards moving snowboards vs. downhill skiers the ski runs themselves should have some fun stuff. You just have to approach it differently than winter skiing. Make sure that it freezes overnight. Then catch the slopes that either have direct sun or low enough elevation to thaw slightly as you arrive. It will probably only take one or two runs for them to go off and get too warm. Then move up or to another area that the sun is just hitting. Follow that barely thawing pattern around the mountain. |

Most resorts will close middle of April, but at north shore Squaw and Alpine figure to stay open well into May, probably thru May. The skiing will be fantastic, by the way. All corn snow AKA ego snow. |
