Default Inserts and screws.

Hi all, I just got a new pair of bindings and the screws that came
with them are a bit too short. They were hard to get into the board in
the first place and when it finally did, each only screwed in about 3/4
of a turn until snug. Question is if this is enough and safe? I put on
my boots and tried them out and it seemed solid enough but i'm not sure
and don't want to hurt myself if they rip out later. I tried the screws
on a free insert and without the bindings they go in about 2 full turns
before bottoming out.

Any ideas? These are screws for nidecker bindings and they're already a
bit longer than usual so i'm not sure if I could get even longer ones.
Any suggestions would be great. thanks.

I know that for plate bindings, 4 turns is considered the minimum safe. I
would guess that the same holds true for soft bindings - although softer
boards may be too thin to allow for 4 turns of engagement.

You might want to get in touch with the board manufacturer - I am sure they
would be happy to make a recommendation.

In any case... snowboards generally take M6x1.0 threaded screws. I think
most bindings come with 16 mm screws; other lenfgths may be available at
your hardware store. I find myself needing unusual lenghths like 14 mm and
18 mm - which I obtain from www.mcmaster.com.

3 turns is good for soft bindings.

If the screws only go in 2 turns before bottoming out without anything
in the way, something is definitely wrong.

I had the same problem with a different brand of binding. I went to the
hardware store, which carries metric strainless steel screws, and bought
longer screws.

Are you sure they're the right size of screw (diameter/thread pitch)?
How many turns can you get your old screw into a free insert?

Well, it is the same diameter as the old screws with the same thread
pattern, just a little longer. They came with the bindings. Both go in
max 2 1/4 turns, tightened without any bindings. I tried the same screws
on another old board I have and they go in 3 full turns, so I don't
think the screws are the problem. I guess the board was just made this way?

Are you testing that on the inserts closest to the center of the board, or
closest to the tip/tail? On many boards, inserts are deeper toward the
middle of the board... in any case if it's just one insert, I would guess
it's a bad insert...

Mike,

You're right, the 2 1/4 turns were the inserts farthest from the
center. The ones at the center let the screw in almost 4 turns. Anyway,
I took your advice and contacted the boardmaker and he let me know that
2 turns should be adequate with soft bindings so as long as i get some
longer screws i should be safe. Thanks for the advice.
