Jay T's Big and I mean BIG Saturday Workout 1-17-04
I skied the famed Balsam Branch Vinterfest 20K Skate race. The course
held up pretty well considering the recent rain, warm temps and lack of snowfall. We had a pretty small field which allowed me to take 7th overall out of 38. I was 4th in the 40-49 age group but would have been first if they had a 45-49 group... That's what happens when the competition is at the Seely Hills Classic which probably had a much tougher field than the National Masters 30K in Marquette. My time was 1:04.32. Ben Popp won the race in 56:58. The next fastest guy was 1:01 something. I would have been around 1:03 something but crashed on one of the "S" turns. I was right in front of Klay Diggins at the time but he made it through the corner. Anyway, I had my formerly slow rock skis because of, well, the rocks... I've beaten them up pretty bad the last couple of seasons. They're a pair of first generation, Peltonen Supra Caps. Yesterday, I put in a coat of CH10 and then warm scraped them. Tons of base material came up. Then, I put in a layer of CH7. Once again, I warm scraped them. The finishing layer was Star Ultra Tech Purple for the 10-32F range. The race temp was closer to 30F so I ironed in some Star F2 Fluoro powder. I had good skis but still managed another petex scrape on one of the rocks. As a result, I was glad I used the rock skis... I went to the race with Bill Stuber and Steve Clancey. Among the many (38)there were Bruce and Margaret Adelsman, Rick and Lisa Wheeler, Craig and Kim Ruud (who won the women's race), John Dewall who won the 10K, Lori Belz who raced the 10K and Jerry Engen who provided support, Len Coequyt, Bill Quinn, Dan Alms, Erik Minge, Mark Newman, Paul Schoening, Tom Meyer and Tim Wilke. The total time skiing including warm-up, race and cool-down was 3 hours. Jay Tegeder "Stick around this sport long enough and you'll beat everyone at least once!" JT |
