A friend in Montana put pictures on his facebook page of sailing his little boat over to its winter mooring.

That doesn't make sense. The lakes freeze in Montana. Shouldn't he
pull his boat?

Apparently they lift it out of the water, but don't drag it up on land.

Do they pull up the centerboard? Or do they lift it up five feet?
When the lake freezes, do they set it back down on the ice? Does he
take off the motor and the sails while at the mooring ball?
It seems easier to pull the boat.

I have seen this wintering-mooring donw two ways - one is a pair of hoist straps that lift the boat high enough out of the water so that the ice will not damage it. The other (seen in Boston Harbor in mid-winter) is to bubble air and unfrozen water around the hull to keep an unfrozen ring around it..
