Early skiing in California? Mammoth? Cheap hostel?

Hi,
anyone can advice where to go for to early skiing/snowboarding in
california (possibly the nearest place to San Jose).
I have heard of Mammoth, they open on 11.Nov, but is pretty far way.
Any ideas?? Does any one know cheap hostel there?

It all depends on when the snow comes. I'm sure Mammoth is opening on Nov
11, *conditions permitting*.

Boreal at Donner Pass makes snow and is often the 1st Tahoe resort to open.
It's teeny though.

Kirkwood was open on the weekend of Oct 23rd. It was open again the
following weekend (Oct 30th). Last I checked, season passes at Kirkwood
are going up in price, meaning they have had plenty of people buy passes
for this season.
