I've tried to send a TR report from our trip to Sun Peaks twice and I
haven't seen it. First try was around 3:15 this afternoon and then again around 8:21. If anyone has seen it (the subject line is: Sun Peaks, BC) please let me know. Interestingly the BBR ski report, also sent around 3:30 came through just fine. Thanks. |

This makes sense since the valley that includes the city of Kamloops looks for all the world like the Carson Valley in Nevada, at least in this dry winter landscape. Some 20 or 30 miles (or so) east of Kamloops following various prescribed roads we come to the "village" of Sun Peaks. There are lots of condominiums with various shops which cater to skiers on the bottom floors. We had actually planned this trip for Christmas 2010 but due to events had to postpone until this year. Serendipitous that this happened (more later). Sun Peaks, compared to Killington has statistics as follows: SP area: 3678 acres K: 752 acres SP vertical: 2894' K: 3050' SP Highest Lift Elev: 6824' K: 4150'(Approx) SP Av. Snowfall: 18.5' K: 20.8' SP Lifts: 11 K: 22 (no Pico) SP Trails: 122 K: 140 (no Pico) SP Alpine Bowls: 2 K: 0 Commentary on Stats: Acreage is huge at SP but I suspect that lift served acreage is closer to that of Killington within the boundaries shown on the maps of each ski area. Vertical drop is similar but at SP there are upper parts of the mountain that you won't ski every day while at K there are lower parts you won't ski every day. Yeah snowfall is comparable but New England has periods of warm weather and rain in the winter which usually isn't a concern in the Rockies. Uphill capacity is quite a lot less than Killington but is reasonable for the number of skier days the area gets. Number of trails is comparable. Alpine bowls? Well that's just something we don't have here in New England except maybe for the snowfields at Sugarloaf. The wonderful and interesting thing that was aparent to us when we got to SP was that in a snowless year over much of North America, SP had SNOW. In fact we had more than a foot of the stuff fall over several nights while we were there. I'm told this is the usual turn of events. Not too many really big dumps, but a few inches on a very frequent schedule. This made for WONDERFUL conditions. It's too bad that we can't really know how the snowfall for a year is going to turn out because if we did know that snowfall for a given area of North America was going to bad, I'd book a period of time at SP any time. The trails system is interesting as the shape of the mountain is one of beginning fairly gentle and getting steeper until you get to the bottom. This makes the trail designation a bit unnerving until you realize that the blue square trail you coaxed your wife down was just like Rams Head for the first half way, then it got steeper, but it was wide and bumpless toward the bottom. Mountains in the Greens seem to start fairly steep and get gentler as you go down. Look at the Taconic Mountains down around Dorset and you'll see approximately what SP looked like. The upper reaches were above timber line, we went up but the light was very flat when we did and the snow was manky/grippy and not all that much fun so we came down a bit to ski among the trees. Did I say trees? You could duck in most anywhere and the trees themselves were western fir of some sort with reasonable spacing. There wasn't enough snow yet to discern any tree well danger and the limbs come down quite close to the ground. Cushiony if you hit one. In California, the trees are Ponderosas, quite far apart but usually enough room for 3-4 turns per tree. The trees at SP were more like New England but with GOOD quality snow and frequent stashes if you went far enough afield. The one thing we did was to rent a ski-in/ski-out condo. This was a first for me and I thoroughly enjoyed being able to put my boots on in the comfort of a Living Room and the price was not outrageous for six of us. It's a nice experience and I'd recommend it to most anyone. SP was celebrating its fiftith anniversary of being open. The New Year celebration was a big-air display, a torchlight parade and a fireworks display. The big-air and fireworks were quite good but the torchlight parade (led by Nancy Greene) was delayed for a long time at the top and when they came down it was more of a "cluster" than a "parade". Our torchlight parade at Killington several years ago was far better. Sun Peaks is what Les Otten wanted to turn Killington into, a Destination Resort. It has all of the amenities available within walking distance. We never started our car once we arrived until we left. No need. With that in mind, notice the apparent lack of uphill capacity at SP. This is less of a problem than it appears. We were there during a very intense holiday week and the longest line we put up with any day was no more than ten minutes and one of those day was a Saturday. Killington's uphill capacity is only really used on weekends because that's what it is. This is not necessarily bad, but the uncrowded trails at SP was a welcome respite from a Saturday at Killington. In short we loved it. We enjoyed skiing with grandchildren and skied together a lot more than I think we would at another area. My wife was the weakest adult and did pretty well on the greens and blues all day long. Nobody had to wait for anybody very long. I don't know if that's a function of the area or not, but it was pleasant. It was easy for my wife and the kids to go down a green or blue while the stronger adults cut the hypotenuse down a black diamond or woods trail. We only found one REALLY challenging trail. There are apparently others but this was our experience. We had assigned my wife and grandchildren to the swimming pool and tubing park while we went across the street to Mt Morrisey which has more challenging terraine and a north facing aspect. We expected better snow on the last day after two nights with no dusting. And we found it. Went out around on a blue trail to skier's left. We had seen on the map that several black diamond trails came of this. I skied up to one of these and found a sign that said something like this and I should have taken a pictu "Inconsistent terrain, steep slopes, thin snow cover, obstacles in the way. Skiing not recommended." but the trail was open (I never go down a closed trail). The first half was fairly steep and had little fir trees poking up through but was easy enough to ski on and through. Then we came to fork in the trail. We took the right fork. The trail proceeded to get narrow (down to maybe 30 feet) a LOT steeper, had a hinky fall line (fall down and you go in the woods) and the little fir trees were more numerous and the trail had bumped up somewhat. To make a short story we got down fine and had a story to tell at the end of the run, but the place does have challenging trails. Fun. |

Is there a size limit on usenet posts? this and your BBR post which makes me laugh because I had to look for a license which the driver had miss placed the plate reads "BBR 79" Going back to Okemo on thursday taking a coaching session on friday with my son. Then going to have my boots fitted by the boot shop in Ludlow working with the coach and he stuffed two trail maps in my sons boots and he went straight and faster. But he want to take me to boot fitter and get me pointed the right way. I was going to go back to surefoot but since I will be at okemo a bit this year it is easier there. After training and runs I am the slowest in my age group but the only one who ran on 165 skis and no speedsuit. If they run as straight a course as they set today will run the 181 and use them like speed skis otherwise if it is set like a GS will use 171. By the 4th gate I was in a tuck and carried that position until finish. I do think it will be similar tomorrow as there is not enough snow to set a good course it will be rutted up by the time 1/3 of the racers had done their first run. |

You had to haul all your gear uphill for a mile and it took three trips. And the snow guns ran all night and since you were right on the slopes there was a snow gun close by. Vote for Romney. Did you see the size of some of the runon posts where nobody snipped anything back in the day? Unless you were gone for 6 years and posted about everyday I don't thing you'd reach a limit. Indeed, I've been looking forward to Richard Walsh showing any sign of ethics or decency. For years. |
