Shiny pretty things... ooooh...
So I'm in a big box sporting goods retailer, and happen to not only
wander by the small rack of skis (not unusual), but actually glance over to see what's for sale (unusual). Those Volants sure are eye-catching, especially when they're marked down to well under $200... having decided that I don't need any new skis for at least another year, I was sort of embarrassed to find myself actually making note of the models and lengths. A little research convinced me that even at that price, neither the EpicT3 nor the Machete Soul is exactly what I would want in a new ski......still, they sure were shiny and pretty there on the shelf. All of which is a long-winded way of saying that summer is really wearing out its welcome. bw |

It is imperitave that one keeps up with the new gear each season, so that when it becomes available at 50 to 75 percent off in a year or so you know what to buy. //Walt |

I've found (case in point up top) that NOT keeping up with the gear pays off. That way, when you see it at a great price, you still have to go home and hit the net to research it, which gets you out of range of the siren's song and markedly increases the chances that you'll stick with what you've got for another year. bw |

Research on the net is fine, but there's no substitute for actually demoing the stuff on real snow, and it can be kinda hard to find a place to demo two year old gear. But my approach means hanging around the demo hut, which has a much louder siren song than the stores. Ya just gotta have discipline and restraint. Anyway, I'll continue to keep my eye out for those orange P40s at Crystal and Caberfae this year. Let me know if the status changes. //Walt |

Other than that, no changes....will post news if winter ever gets here. bw |
