Default Where is good snow beg. of this April?

In message . com,
writes
Hi all,
We are a group of 4 people going for 2 weeks skiing vacation (have no
chance doing it earlier this year).
2 of us are intermediates, I am kind of 'off-pist powder' guy, and my
wife has never skied, but I will teach her this year.
I usually had good luck with Tignes, and even with Argentier in late
April, but I suspect my wife will want to walk around more than to
ski, so I'd prefer somewhat 'nicer-looking' resort than Tignes.
I found cheap flights to Geneva and to Munich in around Apr. 5., and
we will take a car - driving long is not a problem.
Can St.Anton be skiable this time of year without that mud feeling?
Any recommendations, please?

At the risk of sounding like a stuck record - Val d'Isere!!!!!
Never known the snow to be bad even at the end of Apr and there are
heaps of things to do for those weird creatures that don't like going
out on the snow.
St Anton struggles to maintain a piste back to resort in Apr.

Felly sgrifennodd Ace :
IME this is just not correct any more. In general, resort accomodation
and on-mountain food are most expensive in France, followed by
Austria, then Swizerland, with Italy being the bargain-basement.

I'm glad you said that Ace, it's about time people realised that
Switzerland is not expensive. It's also the easiest to drive to. It
beats me why most Brits still head for France. But don't tell them all,
I want the place to myself

Very much so, especially the last part

This year, I payed exactly the same price for ski passes at
Flumserberg (which I consider to be expensive due to its location near
Zurich) and at Damuels in Austria- which wasn't really spectacular
looking at the slopes and possibilities (it just was one of few places
that had snow )

Not quite sure of the point you're trying to make, but lift passes are
fairly similarly priced across Switzerland, varying between 50 and 60
francs for a day, except for the 'premium' resorts of Zermatt and
Verbier and the very small, one- or two-lift places. Flumserberg is in
the cheaper range of resorts, at around 50, IIRC. But a little gem in
its own right, and one of many smaller Swiss resorts that don't
attract so many bloody foreigners.

But I don't mind if everybody (including my fellow Dutchmen) keep
travelling to France and Austria..

Quite. Mind you, there were quite a few of your fellow-countrymen in
Engelberg this weekend...

I'm afraid that might also be party of infiltrated Dutchmen, as a lot
of my friends already settled around Zug. But they are of a kind that
generally behaves and speak Schwitzerdutsch.

What I don't dare to ask.... how do you know they were Dutch?

The point that I wanted to make is that in my opinion Switzerland is
being thought of as expensive, but been overtaken by the booming
resorts in Austria and France. They are thought to be cheap, but even
if they are not more expensive in absolute price, then at least they
are in value for money.
I get more for the same price in Switzerland- with the bonus of less
Dutchmen (at least for now..)

Naah, these were real dutch on holiday.

Err, they were speaking Dutch.

But yes, there are still much fewer here that one would find in most
French or Austrian resorts.
