Snow Summit 12-21-12
I decided Thursday night I wasn't going to decide whether to go to SS
until I got up Friday morning. When I woke up at 6AM (the world had not ended!) I decided to sleep in instead, but when I checked the SS website I noticed they had opened a couple more trails so I saw that as an omen to get going. I didn't get on the road until 8:30 (my usual scheduled departure is 5:00), late enough so that the main parking lot was full and I had to park down in the Brownie Road shuttle lot. I got onto the snow a little before noon. The surface was fluff on crust. I liked the fluffy parts, hated the crusty parts. I especially hated the transitions from piles of fluff to stretches of uncarveable crust. However, I was able to fin nice stretches of fluff and corduroy below chairs 3 and 7, so I had an enjoyable afternoon. The sun was out, fading to light overcast later in the day, crisp-cold temperature so no melt-slop, and no wind. I skied until almost 4PM, getting in a good half day's work, riding every open lift and most trails except the bunny slopes. When I broke for lunch and water break, I got to check out the wifi both in the Summit Haus up top and the lodge at the bottom. I was able to connect with my Kindle both places. The ride home was uneventful except for the 30 miles of Friday afternoon traffic backup through San Bernardino and Riverside. |

The fluffy stuff is pretty, but slow. Crusty is predictable. I especially hated the transitions from piles of fluff to stretches of uncarveable crust. Huh? I don't understand, but don't explain, it won't help. I'm just SOOOO happy with my shorter skis. They do everything my longer ones do, but with less muscular effort. However, I was able to fin nice stretches of fluff and corduroy below chairs 3 and 7, so I had an enjoyable afternoon. The sun was out, fading to light overcast later in the day, crisp-cold temperature so no melt-slop, and no wind. I wish they'd open up the 'East Why' run. Short, but steepish and rarely crowded. No 'terrain features'. But NOOOO! I skied until almost 4PM, getting in a good half day's work, riding every open lift and most trails except the bunny slopes. When I broke for lunch and water break, I got to check out the wifi both in the Summit Haus up top and the lodge at the bottom. I was able to connect with my Kindle both places. My Canon A400 camera won't work when it's cold, and keeping it in a pocket doesn't keep it warm enough. If I fall on it, small ($5) loss. The ride home was uneventful except for the 30 miles of Friday afternoon traffic backup through San Bernardino and Riverside. -- Cheers, Bev ================================================== ==== Guns kill people like spoons make Rosie O'Donnell fat. |
