Default Ski Resorts open in Switzerland

Anybody got firsthand reports of where there's currently some ski-able
snow in Switzerland? I've got some time off work and wouldn't mind
some skiing but things look pretty grim doing the rounds of the resort
websites.

Grim? For the 1st week in Dec things are looking pretty amazing. Check
some of the other posts, it seems Zermatt and Verbier are well and truly
open for business.

Rule: stay high, avoid south facing slopes. It's getting warmer and not very
snow friendly.

Pretty weird weather, it's forecast to be fairly cold and snowy in
France (Grand Massif area at least) for the next week. I guess this is
the foehn(sp?) blowing?

Yes, Foehn to an extent, also changing weather patterns. Not very good if
you are a ski company with a high level of debt to repay.

I see the Russians are not signing Kyoto so that'll mean more man-made
gasses, more warming etc. Add this to the US pollution and general climate
change and the future for skiing round here is quite possibly not
financially viable in ten years.

Simon, you don't half talk some garbage, you know ;-)

Even if one accepts that climate change is happening to any
significant extent and that there's some sort of causal link between
it and 'man-made greenhouse gases', the time scales here are
completely unrealistic. Not even the most hardcore 'global warming'
nuts^Wscientists would expect that any change could possibly make
itself felt within ten years.

Until I noticed your sig, Ace, I thought it must be President Bush
gracing this ng (does he ski, btw ?).

I have a friend who has climbed around Chamonix all his life, who
remembers when the glacier used to actually be IN the town. Care to
look where it stops now ? Over 25-30 yrs. OK, not 10, but hey !

I learnt to ski in Westendorf around 20 yrs ago using the nursery
slopes in the village at 790m - would you spend a week there now ? I
guess their ski-related income must be down a bit ?

At least we don't have to wait long to see if Simon's right.

Nice of you to try to cheer us up, Ace. Especially today (do you read the
papers?).
