Tricks to staying warm at -20C?
Doesn't impress the ladies too much, but a piece of moleskin (or
better, molefoam) down the bridge of the nose is one of those tricks Blake is referring to. I did both 50's (just a tour of the food tables on Sunday, no racing) and got no frostbite at all with that trick at last year's -25C Keskinada. Best, Peter |

.ca... Doesn't impress the ladies too much, but a piece of moleskin (or better, molefoam) down the bridge of the nose is one of those tricks Blake is referring to. I did both 50's (just a tour of the food tables on Sunday, no racing) and got no frostbite at all with that trick at last year's -25C Keskinada. Best, Peter That's an excellent technique which I personally like better than the vaseline. In the early 80s, an old Inupiat guy I knew told me to smear 'nuvuq' (snot) on my face to prevent frostbite. I never figured out if he was pulling my leg. Last year, someone (a Finn) told me about another variant - paper tape (the thin white medical kind - not athletic tape). Advantages are that it doesn't stick to the skin as strong as moleskin and therefore less painful ripping it off. But I was told that it works very well - breaks the wind which is mainly what causes frostbite on protruding facial areas. Haven't actually tried it, but will soon. I've also seen duct tape used on the face, but I think that's a desparation move because of what it would feel like peeling off, and the glue residue that would probably have to be removed with alcohol or mineral oil. Again, haven't tried it. Griss |
