Let's torch Gats!
http://canada.com/national/story.asp...6-BA528F099741
sarcasm Being a Canuck living in Montreal we sometimes get "Gats envy" when Ottawa residents brag about how great the skiing is in late June and how gorgeous the park is, yada, yada.. Well it appears some want to torch the thing to save it from itself. Hell yah! Where do I sign up? /sarcasm J -- Justin F. Knotzke http://www.shampoo.ca |

Let's torch Gats!
Given the tone of some recent postings the last thing I want to do is to get
in the middle of a friendly discussion between two of my Northern neighbors but Tims post reminded me of the time that I did the Gatineau 55. (Pre Keskinada days 1995) After an eternity climbing Penguin Hill we came out on top ( I hope my memory of the course is right) and the view was tremendous, it seemed we could see forever. I actually stopped to enjoy the scene and it remains one of my favorite memories from all of the Worldloppet races....I also have another memory of later in the race coming down the long Parkway stretch with my calves and quads on fire. Saw some colors changing kayaking on a lake in Northern Wisconsin, USA last weekend and not a mosquito or black fly to be seen....very glad the summer is coming to an end although it was 90F again yesterday in St. Paul. As you should! Well it appears some want to torch the thing to save it from itself. Hell yah! Where do I sign up? /sarcasm Now, now. All that'd do is improve the view from the escarpment and the parkways. Tim |

I'm not really in favor of Justin's proposal, but I'd have to say that, if you wanted to set the Gatineau afire, there has got to be a simpler way than this. Lew Lasher Cambridge, Massachusetts |

Let's torch Gats!
I only did the 55 course 2 or 3 times, but I always enjoyed the McClosky climb because of how many people I would pass on the way up. There were other parts of the course I disliked a lot (like the start for one), but somehow this climb always clicked for me. -Mitch On Tue, 9 Sep 2003, Tim Dudley wrote: I know exactly where John means - it wasn't Penguin, but rather McClosky (trail #40), which was the big climb after crossing Meech Lake. It was the second time you had to climb the escarpment, and with all the little false plateaus, it seemed as if you'd never ever get to the top of the damn thing. But when you finally did, and came out at the Champlain Lookout, all was forgiven. It seems as if you can see about half way into New York State from there. The view is still there, but it's not the same if you haven't slogged up McClosky to get to it. Tim (Were those the Good Old Days??) |
