I think Peltonen had a "lighter" carbon fiber ski out a while ago.
Wonder if anyone has experience with that?

I think Zach Caldwell states in his website that Germina had a carbon
ski a few years back and no one would ski them.

I wonder what these things will cost...

Don't the new Salomon skis have a carbon top sheet? Maybe this is
Fischer's way of responding in carbon.

Yeah, a ton of experience. I thought these skis (the Peltonen Cosmic)
would be the cat's meow. They had a sidecut, the fashion of that era,
and were made out of a carbon fiber box. They were unable to construct
an empty box, so there was a foam core, but as I remember it wasn't a
structural element. The ski had long pressure distribution fore and
aft, and was torsionally very rigid.

The skis were a bit picky on what conditions they liked, but the big
problem was that after repeated waxings, the base would cave in. I hear
it was a problem with the foam core not releasing the carbon fiber
walls of the ski. By repeated waxings, I waxed the skis over and over
trying to get the hard 4000 petex up to speed for the cold MN snow. So
wax, ski (repeat a few times), grind, wax, ski (repeat a whole bunch of
times). About the time the petex was gliding well, the bases started to
collapse. I had the choice of new skis under warrenty and took it.
PITA.

I think it's smart that Fischer has keep the same construction for the
main core of the ski and only tried to lighten the tips and tails.
They've got a lot of experience with the flex pattern of the current
core.

Vandel proposes a "carbon light" model since last year . 850g 488
Euros.
http://www.ski-vandel.com/produits.php?cat=1&id=4

What's the weight of the Fischers Carbonlite ?

The head of Vandel told me that it required years of tuning to produce
that ski. The trickiest was the tip apparently.
They seems to be quite popular amoung regular Vandel clients, despite
the high price.
I expect to be able to try them soon.

Visually, the cosmic of the Fischer only shows CF for about the first
15 cm of the tip (and some in the tail). I don't think the first 15 cm
are critical for glide characteristics, but it does affect swing
weight. In re-reading Zach's review, it sounds like the core has been
changed to lighten the ski, but it's not CF.

That's correct Jay. They've made use of carbon fiber to lighten the tip
and tail. They've further lightened the whole ski by changing the core
configuration. But they have not used additional carbon fiber in the
core - or in any of the structural laminations in the mid-body of the
ski. I've got all sorts of technical questions for the folks at Fischer
- there's a whole lot I don't know about the ski. But I'm pleased with
what I've seen in that it's not throwing away everything they've done
really well for a long time. Call it an evolution if you like. The
continuity in the design gives me a lot of confidence.

Zach
