Earliest snowboarding in US
Hi,
I'd like to start the season as early as possible this year. Anyone know what ski/snowboard mountains in the US is most likely going to open first? Thanks! Frank |

They have a glacier on the top of the mountain and the Palmer lift stays open all year except for a brief maintenance window. They're open this weekend. Other than that, there are a number of resorts that regulary open in mid to late October, but this is subject to the weather so you can't really count on any of them. Colorado often has skiing in October due to the high elevation and proximity to an eager clientelle that makes it cost-effective to start the season ASAP. Loveland is usually first - they're making snow now and could open any day. Wolf Creek is slated to open on Nov 7th. with Copper Mt. slated for Nov 14th. Boreal, near Tahoe on top of the Donner pass, is another early opener. Mid October is a possibility for an opening date. Kirkwood and Mammoth are two other CA resorts that sometimes are going by Halloween. In the midwest, Ski Brule in Michigan's UP is the first to open, usually early november, but sometimes in mid to late October. In the east, KMart and Wildwood are the best bets for October skiing. Jay Peak and Tremblant usually open mid November. There's rarely any action in Utah until November - Brighton is usually the first to get going (around early to mid November). //Walt |

Usually when resorts first open they can be fine if you live locally, are traveling an hour to get there and have appropriate expectations. However, if you're going to travel 6 hours or fly, etc, it's a different story, because the conditions typically aren't that great at first. I've been to resorts early season where only a small amount of the mountain is open and you have a huge crowd channeled into a small space. With beginners mixed with experts, people out for the first time of the season, etc, it can be a less than desirable experience. My advice is to make sure wherever you go that regardless of whether they are officially open, there is enough snow and enough trails open to make it worthwhile. |

It also obviously helps if you can go during mid-week. |

Loveland opens tomorrow, Wed. Oct 15, 2008. Cataloochee opened yesterday (Oct 28), joining Timberline, A Basin & Loveland as the only resorts open so far. Where's Cataloochee? North Carolina, believe it or not. http://www.cataloochee.com/ //Walt |
