Default When the season is about to start, what makes a "good base"?

Hi-

I've heard from a lot of people (and resort websites) about good
bases, good starting bases, etc...What is defined as a good base? How
do you make one? Lots of cold nights? Warm days, cold nights? Is
there some "science" to this?

Thanks

Cheers,
