Default US Combined strategy?

A tiny bit of a bummer about the 3 US Combined dudes -- Spillane,
Lodwick and Demong. It seemed like Billy was tired from chasing, Todd
was tired from sitting on the front nearly the whole time and Johnny
was tired from sitting on the front the first half.

Maybe from the very start the French winner knew the US would have to
work too much -- Todd had the gap off the front, Johnny in the middle,
Billy off the back = work. French guy = sit in. OK, so much for me
figuring strategy...

Lodwick had a nice early gap. So maybe Spillane was at the front of
the 2nd group going semi-easy, letting that gap hang as long as
possible. I guess it's good for a teammate to be at the front if he's
not closing the gap or if he's at least holding off the others. But in
general it seemed like our guys were setting the pace at the 3
critical points and that has to involve working. Maybe they were also
slightly backed off to let Billy Demong join asap? Maybe Lodwick sat
at the front in the final few km's to let Billy rest a bit since he'd
just caught up? Maybe Johnny went early after the Japanese guy coz
Johnny isn't such a hot sprinter? He's pretty skinny looking. Was the
Japanese guy any kind of threat? The French winner looked like a slow-
tempo locomotive.
