Squaw is nowhere near Heavenly. Squaw is 80 out of Reno, Heavenly is
50,
through Carson City.

Will that be much faster than via Truckee and 89 to the lake?

50 to Heavenly is definitely faster than 80 to Truckee, then 89 to
the lake, then around the lake. Truckee to Stateline can take an
hour or more.

Okay, but in our case we're taking off at 6-7AM and driving towards
Tahoe. I still think Squaw via i-80 will be at least half an hour
faster than Heavenly via Carson City, probably a full hour faster.
7AM + 10 hours of driving gives 5PM arrival time, that's when the
night skiing starts at Squaw. Ski for 2-3 hours, then drive up to
a hotel and crash in at 10.

Night skiing at Squaw is actually quite a nice experience, the
big gondola, views of the night village, etc. Slopes are easy,
but hey after 10 hours of driving that's what you need.

once you hit reno nothing is closer then heveanly. I MO?

Ok I decided to actually go see if you guys are full of it.
It's 38 miles from Reno to Squaw, and 60 miles from Reno
to South Lake Tahoe. Considering that I-80 is A LOT more
straight and has 70mph speed limit most (if not all) of
the way, it is indeed at least half hour faster to Squaw
then to Heavenly, probably more than that. Mapquest
estimates an hour and a half for Reno-SLT and only
half an hour from Reno to Truckee, and it's only 8 miles
from exit 89 to Squaw with 55mph speed limit.

He's staying at the Cliff. **NO** need for a car at all. Same at Heavenly.
Once he's there, he **HOPES** that the roads close.

Haha.. damn right I do

That was the main reason to pay the extra $40 or so a night to stay up on
the slopes.. if the road gets closed, I could have possibly the best skiing
day of my life.. its a gamble, and only a small chance of coming off, but if
it does it will be more than worth it..

This is something I will certainly have to check, however surely they

would
prefer me to use chains in the snow, than run off the road and smash up
their car..

Check the fine print. SOme car rental companies have nasty extra charges
for seemingly innocent things like driving over a state line. You may
find
that they will charge you extra if you bring the car back with road salt
on
it. I think it is best to be up front about what you plan to do. You may
even be able to get a car equipped with chains.

What they really wnat you to do is rent the car and then never leave their
lot with it, but leave the motor running so you can pay their jacked-up
fillup prices for gas.

Yeh.. I'm always very sceptical of rental companies.. however I have read
their conditions and as long as I don't take it out of the continental US
then I'm fine.. I have sent them an email about the chains, saying I am
going up to Tahoe and Yosemite (which isn't unreasonable when hiring a car
for 3 weeks from LA) and we'll see what they say..

I'm hiring from Dollar, if anyone has any comments on these guys that would
be good..

Hi all..

I am going to be skiing at Alta/Snowbird on the 6th and 7th of December,
then driving on the 8th to Heavenly and skiing there for 2 days... Map
point says that it will take about 9 hours, which is fine..

This thread is getting long now, however I have another question, so I
thought i'd just reply to my first post..

Has anyone got a suggestion on where to stop (maybe 2 places) on the way
from SLC to Reno on the I-80?

getting.

And that can be a good thing. You can often upgrade for free, or really
cheap at the rental counter.

Be sure to ask what they can do for you - you might just get a 4WD vehicle
for little or no extra charge.

As for dealing with Dollar, they're nothing special. In fact, I don't
think any of them have much to differentiate themselves one way or the
other, but Dollar should be just fine to deal with.

Not my experience at all. Dollar is the worst car rental company that
I've ever dealt with. They have a habit of taking more reservations
than they have cars, leaving you stranded at the rental desk. It's
happened to me, and it's happened to many others.

If you're idea of how to start a vacation is spending all day waiting
around the airport for your *reserved* car, then rent from Dollar. If
you like being told "your car will be ready in twenty minutes" every 20
minutes for six hours, rent from Dollar. If you like standing around the
kiosk with 50 other angry travelers while the desk help plays dumb and
the manager hides, rent from Dollar.

I've rented from Avis, Hertz, Enterprise, Budget, Trifty and Alamo.
They're all more or less interchangeable. Dollar sucks.

Want other opinions? See
http://www.epinions.com/trvl-Transportation-Auto_Rental-All-Dollar/display_~reviews/sec_~opinion_list/pp_~1/pa_~1#list

Scroll down past the first dozen or so obviously fake 5-star reviews
written by Dollar's marketing department

Worst rental car company I've dealt with. I won't even consider them.
They have a habit of overbooking their fleet and running out of cars. A
reservation means nothing to them.

The other major players (Alamo, Hertz, Avis, Budget, Thrifty,
Enterprise) are all more or less interchangeable. Shop based on price
and location (on airport vs. off site).

If I were you I'd hop over to www.orbitz.com and see what other options
you have. Unfortunately, not all companies rent to people under 25, so
you have to watch that.

Don't forget Mt. Rose, a stone's throw from Reno.
