breakable crust revisited
Hi all,
I got some excellent replies to my "skiing breakable crust" question here two weeks ago. After pondering 'carving with both feet' advice, I realized I was really using the old, narrow-ski weighting-unweighting technique with my fat K-2 AK Launchers (randonee). I got a book. "Ski The Whole Mountain, from powder to steeps to crud to bumps--how to ski any condition at any time," by Eric & Rob DesLauriers. I studied. I went to Sugar Bowl and did the drills on groomers and it worked well. It seemed easy. For the first time I was carving with *both* skis. Today I went to Castle Peak summit and skied the WNW aspect down to Round Valley. There was light powder, heavy snow, hard crust, breakable crust, you name it. And I did pretty well. Initiating the new turn by tilting my new uphill ski toward the little toe side, counter-rotating by looking--not necessarily downhill but--to the center of my next turn. When I did it right, it felt terrific. I think I made a quantum leap...about time. Thanks again, Bill Maas |
