The Future of Fast Skis...
After the Birkie this year, it seems the key to fast skis is to work
with someone like Zach Caldwell who tests and re-tests waxes and structure. You can't simply follow the recommendations of the wax companies because there are more factors involved than temperature and structure. I know the Germans have been fast the past couple of seasons on the World Cup. They apparently have put a lot of emphasis on ski flex/presure distribution. The Future of Fast Skis...

BTW could someone explain (in very simple terms) what is the essential difference between the two terms - and why two skis with the same flex can have different pressure distribution patterns? Can I explain it? No - I'll take a shot at it, though. It is probably due to a bunch of simple things that happen during production - temperatures vary a few degrees past the high / low point, a job-lot of raw materials may be just a few clicks different than the last batch, the top sheet graphic layer is thicker than last Tuesday's run, etc. But I think we all know it and feel it at times - I heard a local high school racer say it to her dad the other day "...man, those skis felt really squirrely coming down that hill - can I use the (brand x) instead?" Once again, Zach Caldwell gets pointed to for an explanation. He takes a way more involved and technical approach to it on his website - http://www.engineeredtuning.net/ClassicFlex.pdf http://www.engineeredtuning.net/SkateFlex.pdf HTH, - Bob |

I think that the Eagle River Nordic site can help you understand the difference and the effects. http://www.ernordic.com |
