Looking for New Ski Recommendations for Intermediate/Advanced Skier
2 year ago me an my wife took up skiing, we purchased a couple of
pairs of entry level skis. In that period we have gone skiing over 60 times and moved up in our skill level. Presently we have been avoiding intermediate trails, to easy. Have no problem doing diamonds, and have been starting to do double diamonds, with varied condition, i.e. bumps, ungroomd powder, moguls, etc.. We are not great on these trails, but we do manage. It is now time to upgrade our skiis, from reading reviews we have been leaning towards Volkl and Atomic, with a slight consderation for K2. We ski East Coast, mostly NY and VT. Any recommendations? Tips for good review, etc.. would be greatly apprieciated. |

While there are family characteristics within complete brand lines, they are of little interest except to experts, and are undetectable to most skiers. However, within a single brand there are major differences between skis. You should decide what kind of skiing you wish to do - groomed carving; racing; powder; steep hop turns; moguls, backcountry; etc; and in what combinations; and focus on classes of skis, not on brands. Each brand will have skis in their line that they believe does well the combination of skiing you desire. So look in their brochures where they describe what each of their skis is intended for; isolate a few models in each brand that sounds interesting (and ask others, instructors, shops, for recommendations of skis for your intended use) and see if you can demo some of the interesting candidates. You will quickly find a couple of likely suspects; then you can shop on service (first) and price. |

It's not to be confused with the RC 4, Fischer's gofast racing series. While the RX4 is aimed at intermediates (they make an RX 6 and an RX 8 for those looking for a beefier ski) it had perhaps the best edge hold of any ski I've tried. A great east coast ice ski. Affordable too. My $.02 -- //-Walt // // http://tinyurl.com/3gg3e |

Look into the Fischer RX 4. Sparks another thought. The OP was mentioned only high advertisement dollars brand names; Walt's selection here is from a lessor known (in the US) brand - there are several excellent ski companies that you will not consider if you just read reviews in Ad supported magazines - check out what else is out there, if you can. Fischer makes some absolutely top skis; so do some of the other lessor known brands. |

I was at one of the local molehills last night during the Wed. night beer-league racing and I think there were more racers on Fischer RC 4s than all other models combined. When you see a bunch of people beating you in the gates and they're all on Model X, you don't tend to pay much attention to what's being flogged in the glossy Ski magazines. -- //-Walt // // http://tinyurl.com/3gg3e |

If you can't find one of those to test ski several pairs of skis, you can do the same thing for a reasonable rental fee at many resort-sited ski shops. Most will take the demo cost off the price if you decide to buy from them. |
