Thats the difference !

Kirkenes sounds kinda exotic and so far north. No snow that far north in
October??

The Gulf Stream is an amazing thing.

Here is a broad genralization: in Norway, most of the country is a
costal area with a winter climate potentially spoiled (from an XC point
of view) by the Gulf Stream, or it is an inland rock that is
uninhabited and/or inaccessible. In Scandinavia, if you need to work
too, Oslo is probably far the best place for XC skiers. If the only
concern is length of the season, northern Sweden or Finland is probably
better.

How's that different from the NY Marathon? Except for the camping out
in -5 to -20 C part?

Excitement surrounding an outdoor winter event?

This is what separates us from the Euro's.
I'm moving to Scandinavia.

You're welcome!

What's your daytime occupation?

Oct/Nov in northern Norway - Kirkenes.

I'd prefer some place like Beitost=F8len, Kirkenes can be both dark and
snowless at that time of the year. Isn't that right Terje H?

Dec/Jan in Finland - Kuuopio.
Feb/March in Sweden - Mora.

OK, but you _have_ to come to Oslo after Vasaloppet in time for
Holmenkollen!

April? Any suggestions

Any mountain you like in Norway!

thanks for giving some insight into the excitment Terje.

My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it.

Terje

Hmm.
Based on my limited experience (3 ski vacations in Norway +
3 summer bicycle tours) and by looking at the map, my
choice of optimum place to live for XC-skiing would
be Gjøvik. It's the 3rd Mjøsa town (after Hamar and Lillehammer)
Mjøsa is the largest lake in Norway.

Advantages:
1 Several 100 km of well groomed trails, including about 70 km
of lit trails. Climate is slightly cooler and drier than Oslo.
Most trailheads can be reached by city bus. There is even a trail connecting
to Oslomarka's system. There are at least 2 competition areas (ski stadium.
skating trails) plus a big competition area with ski jumps
at Raufoss (20 km south).

2 An easy train trip to Oslo (express in just over an hour). There are
stops on the train line which give access to northern sections of
Nordmarka (Grua, Harestua, Stryken, etc).

3 Easy access to Lillehammer and Hamar (there are some really
nice trails just outside of Hamar)

4 About 140 km from Beitostølen which has good early season
skiing (first races of the season?). Just beyond
Beitostølen is Jotenheimen which sometimes has good skiing into July!

Not Holmenkollen, but a nice picture of crowds watching racing in
Norway:

That's Svartedal winning the all-norwegian final in Drammen, with grip
wax, after first feinting out Lind on a pure glide wax semifinal.

Dark but good tracks, lighted. Snow may arrive in the beginning of
October, or late in November. This season I skied from the middle of
November.

Not at se level, I presume? Today the temperature is about 0 to -1C after
weeks with temperatures between -15 to -28. About 1 meter of snow.
