Family XC skiing in Quebec
Hi,
I would like to come to Quebec for Christmas vacation with my family (incl. 13 yrs old son and friends kids - 16-18). Could you recommend a good place for cross-country skiing [snow for Christmas, lots of intermediate trails, good rental skis] in the area where it's not boring for family with older kids, some entertainment exists (say, bowling or some museums or smth else to do). A little alpine [with bunny slopes] might be an option too. I was thinking maybe of Mt. Tremblant or Quebec area, but don't know either. Any suggestions ? Thank you in advance, Oleg [central NJ, USA] |

Oleg:
Noone else has responded yet so.......... Mont. Ste. Anne, outside of Quebec City, is supposed to a very good place for both DH &XC. I've heard it described more than once, from both friends & internet descriptions, as the best in the East, possibly in North America. I have not yet visited this resort though so take this with a grain of salt. Here's their homepage: http://www.mont-sainte-anne.com/ for more info. I have skied the Gatineau, across the Ottawa River from Ottawa. A great place for XC but not a resort. There is a DH area there but I know nothing about it. Ottawa is a great city though and it's less than 15 minutes away. Not near Quebec City but somewhat close the Tremblant. I know nothing of the XC opportunities at Tremblant. Oleg,
I'd recommend Tremblant ... they have a fantastic Nordic ski center there in addition to lots of non-ski options (ie. restaurants, night-life, shops, etc.). It would be hard to get bored. You can rent just about anything and there is something there for just about any demographic. Be warned though, it can get crowded! For something a little quieter there are also plenty of quaint little towns with excellent cross country centers all within 45 minutes of Tremblant. The Far Hills Inn is a beatiful x-c resort located just outside Val Morin (30 mins from Tremblant, 1 hr from Montreal). The Laurentian towns of Ste-Agathe, Morin-Heights, Saint-Sauveur, Val David all present excellent cross country ski destinations with fantastic cuisine, spas, shops, etc. We have a family cottage up there and I'm never bored. As Matt mentioned Gatineu Park is another option. As good a xc destination as you'll find anywhere, though no resorts. You'd likely be at an Ottawa area hotel and commuting so may not feel like your 'getting away from it all'. A few links below, and good luck. We have been xc-sking for two weeks now, thanks to Forest Montmorency trials. Yesterday, we got 10 cm of snow, and we are waiting for 20 more cm for tomorrow. Although north of Montreal is a nice & friendly place, I would recommend you come in Quebec to get the best snow. It is a secret de Polichinel that most xc-skiers pass their holiday time in the Quebec city area because of the deep white stuff. There are many xc and alpine ski centers in the region. You can start by looking at http://www.rssfrq.qc.ca/e-index.html to get an overview of the possibilities there. One thing is sure, you wont miss the snow trials.
